About the
novel:
The
novel of “El Balneario” published in 1995 along with three other stories, was
the first work of the author and got the coffee Gijón short novel prixe in
1954.
After a relatively simple and banal history apparently found a more complex structure
intended to symbolize the true subject of the novel: the relationship between
the conscious, the sharp mind and the unconscious, the field of dreams.
Sleep is a fundamental integral narrative literature of Carmen Martin
Gaite. This is a key element of the fusion of reality and fiction. In the words
of the author herself, the dream "is a vehicle to question what at the time
was unalterable and had to reveal the disappointments of a conventional life.
The
novel, like the plot, is divided into two parts: the dream and the reality that
explains what happened in the first part.
Throughout the first part, the author uses the narrative opinion in first
Person to maintain an ambiguity that confuses the
reader and leads to a similar confusion that she experienced by the protagonist
herself, whom fails to remember that she feels threatened and persecuted, she does
not understand what is happening to her. It introduces fantastic elements without explanation
and the narration becomes surreal.
In the second part, however, everything changes: the third-person narration can provide an objective view of the facts and of the
protagonist, whose routine life is at a Spa which will be detailed.
The language itself is sometimes repetitive and
even the space appears as a symbol of monotony to describe the resort as a place where
objects are symmetrically distributed.
In conclusion, it is a carefully constructed work, as
evidence by the perfect fit between form and what makes all the structural elements serving the topic: the routine of the protagonist and the impact that an empty life is in your dreams, which became an escape from boredom .
The thing we have in common with the novel work
is that the novel is a spa and the work is on the Hot Springs.
